Introducing Melissa Brickey, CHADS Coalition’s New CDO
At CHADS Coalition for Mental Health, our mission is fueled by dedicated individuals who bring passion, experience, and commitment to supporting youth mental health and suicide prevention. We are thrilled to welcome Melissa Brickey as our new Chief Development Officer, a role that is instrumental to strengthening our outreach and impact.
With a career spanning nonprofit leadership, education, and fundraising, Melissa has spent years advocating for young people and ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive. Her journey has been defined by a deep connection to community, a passion for growth, and a belief in the power of hope.
A Career Rooted in Nonprofit Leadership and Advocacy
Melissa has dedicated her entire career to nonprofit work, starting as an educator before realizing her true calling lay in development and fundraising. Her experience leading programs at De La Salle Middle School in North City provided her with a front-row seat to the transformative power of education and community support.
“I loved working closely with students, watching them grow, and helping them navigate their way to high school and beyond,” she shares. Over time, she transitioned into leadership roles, becoming the Executive Director and spearheading efforts to raise $6.5 million to build a new school.
Most recently, Melissa served as Senior Director for Advancement at Paraquad, where she continued her commitment to serving vulnerable communities. Now, at CHADS, she is eager to bring her expertise to a cause that holds personal meaning for her.
What Drew Her to CHADS?
When asked what drew her to CHADS Coalition, Melissa says that “The mission serves a critical need, and it’s founded in love. I could see that from the outside before I even joined.”
With suicide rates rising and mental health struggles continuing to impact families across the country, Melissa knew she wanted to be part of an organization making a real difference. “CHADS has a great reputation and a place in the public arena that’s incredibly positive. The impact it has on young people is undeniable, and I wanted to contribute to that in a meaningful way.”
Since stepping into her role, she’s been inspired by the unwavering dedication of the team and the hope that permeates every aspect of the organization. “The value of love is so palpable here. It’s refreshing, comforting, and incredibly motivating.”
Goals for CHADS: Expanding Resources and Strengthening Community Support
As Chief Development Officer, Melissa has clear goals for CHADS: expanding funding, strengthening donor relationships, and ensuring the organization has the resources to continue growing and reaching more families in need.
“My priority is understanding the programs and their impact deeply. I want to listen, learn, and help turn people’s dreams for this organization into reality.” A major focus will be on cultivating relationships with donors who not only align with CHADS’ mission but also have the capacity to take its initiatives to the next level.
She also emphasizes the essential role of community support. “We cannot do this work without the community. There are so many ways to get involved, and one coming up soon is our Day of Giving. It’s an opportunity for people to contribute to a cause that truly saves lives. But even beyond that, in your day-to-day, show a little love to a young person. Small gestures of kindness can mean everything.”
A Personal Commitment to Growth and Resilience
Melissa’s dedication to this work is deeply personal. She has experienced firsthand what it means to face life’s challenges with resilience and vulnerability. Born with a condition that led to an above-the-knee amputation, she has navigated life with a unique perspective on adversity and strength.
“It’s a vulnerability that people can see, so I approach conversations, relationships, and life itself from a place of openness. I hope that invites people to connect and be themselves.”
Her journey has reinforced her belief that struggles don’t define a person—they shape them. “Disability isn’t always amazing, and it’s not always terrible. Sometimes, it just is. But it has given me the ability to appreciate life in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise.”
Outside of Work
When she’s not leading fundraising efforts for CHADS, Melissa finds joy in her family. As one of nine siblings, she values close connections and the support of loved ones.
She’s also a dedicated swimmer, hitting the pool at the YMCA every morning as part of her self-care routine. “My goal is to swim 500 miles every year. It’s my way of staying grounded mentally, emotionally, and physically.”
And when she’s not in the water, she’s likely in the kitchen. “I love to bake cookies, cupcakes, all of it. It’s another way I express love and care for the people around me.”
Looking Ahead
With her experience, passion, and dedication, Melissa is ready to help CHADS Coalition grow and expand its life-changing programs. “I’m honored to be part of this team and excited about what we can accomplish together. Mental health should never be a silent struggle—everyone deserves support, love, and hope.”
At CHADS Coalition for Mental Health, we remain committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring no young adult has to navigate mental health challenges alone. With leaders like Melissa joining our mission, the future is brighter than ever.
